Training, skills and competencies

Situation: “We’ve spent a lot of money on web platforms and fancy tools but I’m pretty sure no one knows how to use them properly. How Competent Do We Need to Be?”

Issue: We can’t use the tools properly – is it us or them? a need for training and skills doesn’t always start with a clear request. It usually creeps up with a frustration that tools don’t behave how you want them to and realising you (or your team) never knew how to use them properly (and maybe they were just ‘launched at you’.

Solution: Get clear on the underlying problem and scope (never knew how to use it, missing policy, unwritten rules, never told). Understand the specific competencies (and skills) needed to do the job (links back to Ways of Working). Make sure the tools are properly configured. Provide specific training (and back up with support). Provide simple guides (written or video - you may not need to make your own). Build confidence. Grow ‘champions’. Always keep it simple.

Impact: Simple (sometimes one page) user guides which make it clear what to do and how, trained and confident users, massively improved productivity, ease of working, compliant and safety first.
